HOUSING JUSTICE COLLECTIVE

We are a collaborative of experienced organizers, facilitators, technical assistants and national housing policy consultants who work with communities to transform systems towards housing justice.

Our Values

The Housing Justice Collective believes that in order to achieve housing justice, individuals, groups and systems must explicitly center people experiencing oppression and work toward collective healing.

• HJC values an approach that centers the expertise of the people who live in the communities we support and have first hand experience of housing injustice.

• We value practicing anti-racism with humility. We know that white supremacy culture shows up everywhere. We work to actively resist white supremacy culture within our organization and within the communities we serve.

• We value a practice of collective and individual accountability both within the communities we partner with and within our organization.

• We value decentralized, collaborative and cooperative decision-making and are practicing it within our own organization.

Our Team

The Housing Justice Collective is composed of five dynamic and passionate leaders who hold a shared vision for housing justice that is rooted in racial and LGBTQ+ justice. The HJC members have spent the past several years witnessing each other's joy, strengths and struggles in various roles and life experiences and built authentic relationships along the way. As a team, we weave our complementary experiences, skills, styles and visions together and bring an intentional team design to our approach

Areas of Expertise

Strategy Design & Organizing

The Housing Justice Collective brings experience with organizing local communities, advocacy groups, and national movements to design a collective vision and operational strategy to advance housing justice. Our approach centers people who have been directly impacted by systemic oppression while welcoming the people who hold positional power within existing systems to build a collective strategy to shift power to those most impacted.

Process Facilitation

Housing Justice Collective members have expertise in facilitating complex community processes through dynamic facilitation. We create spaces for shared learning, principled struggle, and generating new ideas to transform systemic issues. We bring the value of building and fostering authentic relationships as a necessary part of facilitating towards housing justice.

Technical Expertise

Housing Justice Collective members bring diverse technical expertise in homelessness and housing policy and the design and implementation of strategies to prevent and end homelessness. We bring experience collaborating across different structural systems including child-welfare agencies, juvenile justice, education systems and behavioral healthcare. Our program expertise stretches across homeless response system functions including community outreach, supportive housing programs, Continuums of Care leadership and coordination, and technical knowledge of various federal programs that operate homelessness and housing funds.

Testimonials

Community Impact

I like the idea that everyone matters and that you as the facilitator can hear from different ones in the group and make it all make sense. You have shown that it is not about you, but about the work that has to be done.
— Elder Pam James, Twin Cities Project Advisor
I have enjoyed taking part in building something from the beginning stages and would be honored to continue in developing this amazing system that is rooted in community to help bring homelessness to an end.
— Heather West, Twin Cities Project Advisor
